On this day in 1944, the German battleship Tirpitz sank. Here is a British Movietone report with highlights of the life and destruction of the Tirpitz.\n\nThe mighty German battleship which had been hiding out in various Norwegian fjords is no longer operational. The Royal Navy had crippled the ship with their mini-submarines and the RAF finished the job on the 12th November.\n\nCut story (Library Material - KS. On 29.9.44, more aerial shots of another raid, shows low lying clouds, occasional shots of "Tirpitz". Aerial shots of Lancasters in formations. "Tirpitz" firing ack-ack guns & probably her 16" guns. Last attack, Lancasters in flight, perfectly clear sky, approach "Tirpitz", guns open up, 12,000lb bomb falling, & direct hits registering on battleship.
